Chicken Little Science: The Power of Panic

by Jessica Pacholski

Al Gore is not an expert in climatology, as a matter of fact he is only an expert on manipulation. That is all any politician can ever really be an expert in. So, I watch herds of basically well meaning people, march towards a cliff they can’t see because they have been blinded by their own good intentions. As well intentioned as they are their “environmentalism” is leading them to answers that are worse than the problem that we are supposedly facing.

The planets temperature has fluctuated since it’s inception. We happened to create our civilization during an unusually stable period in history as far as climate is concerned. According to ice core samples and satellite research, the temperature anomalies we have been experiencing are not a catastrophe waiting to happen, but simply a cycle that correlates to an increase in solar activity. That is unless you are one of Al’s soldiers. It has to be humans who screwed up the weather cycle, we are destroying the planet. We must act now or die!

What are their solution to our monumental problem? Well, we must become less dependent on “fossil fuels” because CO2 is to blame! We must increase our use of solar panels and drive hybrid cars to lower our emissions. I’ll bite, solar panels. Sounds good doesn’t it? No carbon emissions, right? Well, in the production of the circuitry and the panels involve the use of NF3. What is NF3? Nitrogen tri-flouride. It’s a greenhouse gas 17,000 times more potent than CO2 and is now being found in the atmosphere at 4.5 times higher levels then previously believed. NF3 also has the added “benefit” of being neuro-toxic, something CO2 is demonstrably not. Maybe I shouldn’t  mention many of the components are made of plastics and for what the panels cost they don’t supply adequate power for running a modern household.

Hybrids will save us. Where will you get the electrical power to fuel your hybrid? That’s right coal, at least in most parts of this country. You have to plug these cars in to charge their batteries, which of course increases your household energy use. Not to mention the batteries they use are the most toxic car batteries made. Compact florescent bulbs? Wonderful, if you like dirty electrical emissions and a haz-mat team every time you break a bulb. Why? Mercury. I had to stay away from seafood for 27 months of my life because of it’s neuro-toxic effects and the danger to my daughters’ health due to  in utero exposure. Now I will be compelled, read forced, to use a dangerous light bulb because it will lower my household CO2 “footprint”. I think I’d like to stick with the incandescent bulbs we already have. Oh, wait I can’t they will be ILLEGAL! Bio fuel? Let’s see, it takes almost as much energy to produce as it supplies. It also offsets acreage for food production and encourages clearing of woodlands for production. In short the solutions are just invitations to even more environmentally dangerous problems. Imagine what will happen to ground water when all those mercury bulbs and hybrid batteries start hitting the landfills.

Here’s an idea, since so many actors are pushing for us to go green, I say they should go first! No more award ceremonies, every time they congratulate themselves for their “heroic” work they blow the LA power grid, that could save enough CO2 to offset the rest of us using our washing machines.  They could not make movies in previously pristine wilderness where they leave their Styrofoam sets painted with toxic enamel paints there afterwards. While on that subject, their use of private planes and helicopters to fly to foreign sets and expensive vacations could be sacrificed so that we simple folk could keep our minivans, you know, so we can get our kids to school. Only an industry so saturated with waste, so reliant on the leisure time  found only in free capitalist societies, could ever be so pumped up with such a sense of self importance and have such absolutely hypocritical standards! If they had had an ounce of self honesty they would have burned “An Inconvienent Truth”, as the trash it was, instead of glorifying it so that they could feel as if they are doing something great and noble. Then again, burning it would have just increased their CO2 footprint; we can’t have that can we?

On CFLs, add to it that they don’t actually start saving energy until they are on for five hours! Most lights in my house don’t stay on that long, which is actually increasing my carbon foot-print.

The Farmer’s Almanac predicted a global cooling cycle for the next 30 years, and they are being ridiculed for it. Funny, we’ve just had the coldest winter in the Pacific Northwest that I can recall for the last 25 years.

Thanks for this great piece. May it be shouted from the rooftops.

Now this is the definition of selectivity….The author (Jessica Pacholski) SELECTIVELY ignores how the Bush administration manipulated us though the power of terror.

I don’t know if Gore’s view has benefited from the power of Panic, I only know that America has suffered from Bush’s use of the power of Terror. I also know that a fair article would have at least said as such.

BTW Jaymz, your comment about CFLs is a myth. You can obtain the correct information at the manufacturer’s website or, you can also watch the episode of Myth Busters where they disproved the myth.

I think this article just confirmed what I suspected.
Those light bulbs suck, solar panels, hybrids and bio-fuel are not the answer!,

Also, I agree with Jaymz about the winter here in the Pacific Northwest.
It must be global warming causing the snow and ice ;)

I was not focusing on the War on Terror here, that is why I didn’t mention it. Why would it be fair to mention it? I see a huge body of people who don’t seem to realize that Gore is using the same tactics as Bush to further his own agenda. Do you know what Gore stands to personally profit off of the green tech he advances? Or the dangers of the alternatives we are being given? Panic politics is an anathema no matter how it is employed and screaming Bush every time someone criticizes a democrat is like screaming Chappaquiddick every time some on criticizes a republican. I did not vote for Bush, and there is not a democrat on earth who hates him and what he has done, more than I do. However, it doesn’t let others’ bad policies off the hook either.

Funny, I just realized that you can’t refute anything in the article, just my supposed “selectivity” in pointing out the same tactic is being used by the greens. Interesting.

I can refute quite a few things in your article Mrs. Pacholski, but have chosen not to due to personal biases in the matter. Would you like me to point out what I see as errors in your article, or should I just keep my mouth shut and move on?

  7. Jessica Pacholski January 31, 2009 at 11:59 am #

Go ahead Diogenesis, I’m open. I know that causation and correlation are two different matters. CO2 and mass extinction, I know, is one of your favorite arguments, yet the fact that the rise in CO2 comes after the warming and you have no evidence that the extinctions were caused by an increase in CO2 seems not to matter.Decaying vegetation and bodies produce a lot of CO2 and may indeed be the the cause and not the effect. And your own research, that doomsday flooding, well I hate to tell you the sea level has only gone up 2 centimeters with the highest estimates only reaching 11 centimeter increase over the course of the next century, that is if the warming trend continued. Temps have decreased over the last decade by about .5 degrees celsius each year in relation to a decreasing sun spot cycle and the last two yrs have been the coldest in the last 25 yrs despite the fact that CO2 levels went UP. A Russian climatologist just issued his findings that we are headed towards an epoch of global cooling ending in another Ice Age in about 50,000 yrs. The biggest mistake I made I will retract here, I meant to say that electric cars must be plugged in and hybrids batteries are more toxic. So, yes there I did screw up, sorry.

… If anything survives the apocalypse I hope it is this article. I agree that Al Gore is a bit dogey, but you have to agree he knows how to market his product. Sometimes you have to be a little bad to do a lot of good. Though the question remains; does anything we do (buying hybrid/Hum-V really have an impact? Sorry about the stream of consciousness.
