Some people including those in the music, film industry and also “government” believe that downloading songs and videos from the internet may be “illegal” and wrong, however realistically it is not “theft.”
The music and film industry claim that they are hurt by online piracy; however they are not really hurt in the same way that victims of real theft are. If someone steals your bicycle now he has it and you don’t. However if someone “illegally” downloads a song from the internet the he has a copy but the original is still there.
Intellectual property is non-rival in economic terms, whereas physical property is rival. Looking at this as copying a song or as some call stealing of intellectual property, it is not the same as stealing something that is physical like a bicycle or any other physical property. This video by filmmaker Nina Paley illustrates so simply how copying is not theft.
